Breakfast with Santa

The Breakfast with Santa was a great success with 118 children and grandchildren plus their families. Here is a picture of Santa and Mrs. Claus with just some of their helpers.
Poppy Fund Presentation
December 14, 2011
Cde. Mary Birchnall of the Ladies Auxiliary presented a cheque for $500 to Poppy Chairperson Pat Keeping at the branch general meeting on December 14.
Movember Competition
November 30, 2011
Members of the Cloverdale RCMP detachment grew moustaches during November as part of the "Movember" campaign to raise awareness of men's health issues. Here are the finalists in the competition: from the left, Staff Sgt. Shirley Steele, Cst. Jeff McMichael, Cst. Jean Bissonnette, Special Cst. Rocky Prakash, and Cst. Albert Luk.
The event, held in our branch, raised $1,055 which went to the wife of a Surrey detachment member who is undergoing cancer treatments in Singapore that are not available in Canada and cost $20,000 each.

Susie Francis & The Versatiles

Susie and her troupe entertained a full house with song, dance, comedy routines, jokes, and even a pantomime horse.

Remembrance Day

The rain did not dampen the spirit of the participants in the Remembrance Day ceremony in the Museum Square. There was a large turnout of veterans, serving and ex-military, RCMP, cadets, community groups, and Cloverdale residents.

Poppy Fund Donation
November 10, 2011
C.O. Michelle Sherle of the Surrey Pre Trial Service Centre presents a cheque to Cde. Pat Keeping, Cloverdale Branch 6 Poppy Chairperson. Michelle writes in a note: "Thank you for the opportunity to present our cheque of $155.54 donated by Surrey Pre Trial offenders population for Poppies they made in Arts & Crafts within our Centre. We honour our Canadian veterans and soldiers who served and laid down their lives for our Freedom."
Halloween Dance

Branch General Meeting

The Ladies Auxiliary made a donation of $5,000 to the Branch. Shown here is LA President Helen Kellogg making the presentation to Branch President Pat Ostrom.
Joy Penpenia was the second place winner for Intermediate Black & White Poster from the Legion's National Poster and Essay Contest. Here presenting Joy with a certificate and a cheque for $125 are Pat Keeping, Poppy Chairperson, and Gord Kendrick from the Poppy Committee. Joy is a student at Sullivan Heights Secondary School.
Terry Fox Run

A large crowd turned out for the Terry Fox Run. This was the second year the Run was held at the Cloverdale Legion, and once again the rain failed to dampen the spirits of the crowd.

Comrade Maurice Taylor's Funeral

Cde. Doug Langdon salutes departed veteran Maurice Taylor. Mr. Taylor died on August 16 at the age of 100.

Provincial Golf Tournament
July 27 - 28, 2011
Cloverdale Legion Branch 6 hosted the Provincial Golf Tournament for 2011.

LA Planter Presentation
June 21, 2011
The Ladies Auxiliary presented a planter to the City of Surrey to commemorate the 85th Anniversary of the Canadian Legion. Shown are Councillor Linda Hepner representing the City of Surrey; Cde. Bernice Lewis making the presentation on behalf of the LA; and the combined LA and Branch colour parties.
The plaque reads "This planter was presented on June 21, 2011 to the City of Surrey by the Ladies Auxiliary Cloverdale No. 6 of the Royal Canadian Legion BC/Yukon Command in honour of the Legion's 85th Anniversary".
The new planter is located in Hawthorne Square (176 Street).
BC / Yukon Command Convention

Rodeo Weekend

The Legion Colour Party led the Cloverdale Rodeo parade on a rainy Saturday morning. The wet weather did not deter the crowds who lined the parade route.

Candlelight Tribute
May 7, 2011
The annual Candlelight Tribute commemorating the 66th Anniversay of V.E. Day was helpd at Victory Memorial Park Cemetery. After a commemorative ceremony and laying of wreaths, lighted candles were placed on the graves of all war veterans buried in the cemetery.

Battle of the Atlantic Memorial Service
May 1, 2011
The Branch 6 Colour Party took part in the Battle of the Atlantic ceremony presented by the #307 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps "Mariner".
In a moving part of the ceremony, the names of ships sunk in the battle are read out, a bell is rung, and a cadet announces "They do not answer".
Representatives of the City of Surrey, the Royal Canadian Legion, the RCMP and others placed flowers on the cenotaph.
After the service, the parade marched back to the Branch, where the cadets were treated to hot dogs and pop.

We were entertained by the Sionnaine Irish dancers and the Hong Kong Cowboy, dined on Irish Stew, and toasted the Potato on St. Patrick's Day. Here one of the dancers meets our resident leprechaun Tom Finn.

Jessie Retires
February 28, 2011
Jessie Palmiere has retired after working for the Cloverdale Legion for more than 31 years. Many of her old customers and friends gathered for her last day and shared a cake and other goodies.

Indoor Garage Sale
January 15, 2011
The Indoor Garage Sale was a success, raising $350 for the branch. Many thanks to all those who donated items for the sale, and to the dedicated group of volunteers who put it on.
