General Meeting

December 19, 2012

Penny Dyck, whose husband is a Branch 6 member, won third prize in the Legion Foundation Raffle. She was presented with a cheque for $600 by President Frank Redekop.

Winner of the first prize, a Ford Escape, was Cheryl Morginn from Half Moon Bay. The second prize, a flat screen TV, was won by Tim Robillard from Fernie.

Christmas with Elvis

Book Launch

November 21, 2012

James L. McWilliams, author of The Black War-Bonnet and The Fugitives, two books in the The MacHugh Memoirs series, hosted a book launch at Branch 6. McWilliams, a legion member and arranger of international folk and classical music for the pipes, is an active member of the Canadian Authors Association.

Remembrance Day

November 11, 2012

The Legion Colour Party led the parade to the cenotaph for the Remembrance Day ceremonies. The sky was grey, but the rain held off until after the ceremony.

Branch General Meeting

October 24, 2012

Cloverdale Legion Branch 6 presented the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation with a cheque for $3,000. Shown presenting the cheque are President Frank Redekop, Publicity Chairperson Anne Sharkey, and Poppy Chairperson Pat Keeping. Accepting the cheque on behalf of the foundation is Selina Jano, Director, Annual Gifts & Donor Relations.

The Ladies Auxiliary presented a cheque for $5,000 to the Branch. Shown here are Mary Birchnall of the Ladies Auxiliary and Branch President Frank Redekop.

The Branch presented the George Derby Centre with a cheque for $509 to be used for improvements to their new bus. The money was raised by our "penny drive". Shown here are Anne Sharkey who organized the penny drive, President Frank Redekop, and Bruce Burlington accepting the cheque on behalf of the George Derby Centre.

Terry Fox Run

September 16, 2012

The Legion hosted the 2012 Cloverdale Terry Fox Run. Participants had a choice of 1, 5 or 10 kilometer courses, and could walk, run, bicycle, or use a stroller or wheelchair. The weather was perfect, and there was a good crowd of all ages.

The Legion presented the Terry Fox Foundation with a cheque for $1,000. Here Branch President Frank Redekop presents the cheque to Cloverdale Terry Fox Run organizer Elaine Gooliaeff.

Provincial Golf Tournament

The Branch Colour Party led the parade at the Cloverdale Millenium Amphitheatre on Canada Day. The Branch also set up a display booth courtesy of the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce and the BIA.

Branch and LA Open House

June 22 -23, 2012

The Branch and the Ladies Auxiliary held a joint Open House on June 22 & 23. The pancake breakfast was well attended, but not many people came out to view the displays. However, we did manage to sign up several new members for both the branch and the LA.

Shown is one of the displays, a poster of 158 Canadian servicemen and women killed in Afghanitan, with a poppy for each of those killed.

Honours & Awards Presentations

The Branch and the Ladies Auxiliary held a joint Honours & Awards ceremony. Pins were presented for years of service, and several awards were made for special service to the Branch.

Battle of the Atlantic Commemoration

May 6, 2012

A ceremony was held at the Cenotaph to commemorate the Battle of the Atlantic (1939 - 1945).

A parade formed at the Legion and proceeded to the Cenotaph, with the participation of the Legion Colour Party.

At the cenotaph, a Roll Call of 24 navy ships sunk in the battle was read. Also commemorated were the 75 Canadian merchant ships sunk, as well as the 752 members of the Royal Canadian Air Force and 380 members of the Canadian Army who lost their lives.

The parade and ceremony were organized by the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps "Mariner". Also participating where the 746 Air Cadet Squadron, Army Cadets, RCMP, and several veterans organizations including the Legion.

Contest Winners

April 25, 2012

Awards were given to the annual Remembrance Day Poster, Poem, and Essay contest winners at the Branch General Meeting. These students all received awards at the Provincial Command level.

Winners are (left to right): Erin Murphy, First Place, Colour Poster Primary; Justin Jenkins, Third Place, Junior Black & White Poster; Dwayne Tonta, Second Place, Intermediate Colour Poster; Hao Huang, Second Place, Senior Essay; Christopher Daniel Garzota, Third Place, Senior Poem. Branch 6 85th Anniversary

The Cloverdale Legion Branch 6 was granted its charter on March 19, 2012. We celebrated the anniversay on Saturday, March 17. Fraser Downs Presents Cheque

February 22, 2012

Richard Lancaster of Orangeville Raceways (Fraser Downs) presents a cheque for $2,200 to President Pat Ostrom at the February AGM. The cheque matches $2,200 donated to the Legion in November by champion driver Scott Zeron from Ontario. Other Fraser Downs drivers and trainers donated $500 at the same time.
